Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet-Union, always was ahead of his time: on the political level as much as on the environmental frontier. As early as 1989 he “brought up the idea of an organization that would apply the medical emergency response model of the International Committee of the Red Cross to ecological issues and environmental problems that transcend national boundaries” – the Green Cross International was officially launchend in 1993. Time (and all the problems and global security issues caused by climate change) has proven his foresight right, making the Green Cross International one of the most relevant organizations in this field nowadays and Gorbachev one of the most influential pioneers. Exclusively for Club of Pioneers he gave us his view on Green Cross International in a nutshell.
