The 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour Arrived in Los Angeles

Date: August 25, 2008, posted by Joerg

The BMW Hydrogen 7 pulled into Los Angeles this morning to finish a more than 4,000 mile cross-country journey featuring hydrogen-powered cars by the world's leading automakers in the 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour.

Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine kicked off the tour by driving a BMW Hydrogen 7 off the starting line when the tour began in Portland, ME on August 11.

BMW provided a fleet of four hydrogen-powered cars – two BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel vehicles that use only liquid hydrogen and two BMW Hydrogen 7 bi-fuel vehicles that can switch from hydrogen to gasoline. The four BMW vehicles along with the core BMW CleanEnergy team were on the road for the entire two-week tour.

What was most noteworthy about the Hydrogen Road Tour was the partnership between the world’s leading automakers, key federal departments, influential non-governmental organizations and hydrogen fuel providers to bring the reality of practical, clean energy to our nation’s legislators and the public. The tour visited key members of Congress in their home states to allow them the opportunity to see and drive these vehicles.

BMW Hydrogen 7 Hits the Road With the 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour

Date: August 12, 2008, posted by Joerg

The BMW Hydrogen 7 joins an unprecedented cross-country journey featuring hydrogen-powered cars by the world's leading automakers in the 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour.

From August 11 - 23, the hydrogen powered convoy will travel from Portland, Maine to Santa Monica, California with one goal: to call on congressional leaders to support the creation of a nationwide hydrogen fueling station infrastructure.

Route of the 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour

What is most unusual about the Hydrogen Road Tour is the partnership between the world's leading automakers, key federal departments, influential non-governmental organizations and hydrogen fuel providers to bring the reality of practical, clean energy to our nation's legislators and the public. The tour will visit key members of Congress in their home states to allow them the opportunity to see and drive these cars.

The tour fleet will include the mono-fuel version of the BMW Hydrogen 7, equipped with a V12 internal combustion engine (ICE) which has been engineered to run exclusively on hydrogen. It was created to showcase the zero CO2 and low emissions potential and feasibility of a dedicated hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE).

The Hydrogen 7's V12 mono-fuel ICE produces no CO2 and near-zero emissions, while not sacrificing performance. In fact, the tailpipe emissions are so infinitesimal they pushed the limits of current emission testing technology.

Independent authorities, including the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), have confirmed these results. ANL conducted emission tests on BMW Hydrogen 7 mono-fuel vehicles in early March 2008 and found that not only were the emissions infinitesimally small but when running, the vehicle actually cleaned the air.

And by the way: Recent studies have also confirmed the water emitted by the Hydrogen 7 is, in fact, safe to drink!

Exhaust from the mono-fuel Hydrogen 7 tested by FGL Environmental was found to be well within the limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for safe drinking water standards. The Maximum Contaminant Limit, abbreviated MCL, is the maximum limit set by the EPA for chemicals found in drinking water. Results showed the MCL from mono-fuel H7 emissions to be in compliance with the health safety standards.

Video: Martina Gedeck about the BMW Hydrogen 7

Date: April 27, 2008, posted by Joerg

She is one of Germany`s most renowned actresses: Martina Gedeck earned her outstanding reputation in movies like the Oscar-winning “The Lives of Others” or “Bella Martha”. She is noted for her careful choice of roles and her sincere screen incarnations of characters – which she impressively demonstrates again as Ulrike Meinhof and Clara Schumann in movies coming up this year.

When it comes to environmental matters, Martina Gedeck is no less sincere, as she told us when we met her at the Brandenburger Hof Hotel in Berlin. This is one of the reasons why she gave us her testimonial about the BMW Hydrogen 7 which she used for several months. Watch our video interview!

Pioneering Sustainable Energies: The Hydrogen Vision of BMW

Date: October 02, 2007, posted by Joerg

It is the hour for pioneers in the automotive branch. Climate change, higher oil prices, and dwindling fossil fuels don’t demand simple short-term answers – they demand a new vision of mobility! Almost all manufacturers are working on the research and development of models with innovative, eco-friendly engines. BMW’s pioneers are designing a comprehensive 3-stage strategy for a clean automotive future called “Efficient Dynamics” – culminating in the hydrogen-powered automobile “Hydrogen 7”.

In the first stage of this program sustainable and efficient solutions are integrated into the vehicles of the current series. Part of this stage is the “clean production initiative” that integrates the aspect of sustainability into the entire production process. With its “Concept X6 Active Hybrid”, BMW presented at the IAA 2007 its vision of how a hybrid engine should be introduced medium-term into the range of models. Through a novel transmission system, two compact, high-capacity electric motors and a gearbox with a solid gear transmission ratio are combined. The effect deserves serious attention: The system reduces waste up to 20 percent in contrast to the corresponding model with a conventional internal combustion engine. By the end of 2009 the vehicle will be ready for serial production.

Through its Hydrogen 7 model the Bavarian auto maker not only gives the crowning touch to its clean environmental program, but also presents no less than an ideal vision of future mobility that is already now suited to daily use. “In the long run we will have to depart from fossil fuels”, states BMW press relations officer Daniel Kammerer. “It is our fervent conviction that hydrogen is the only real alternative to gasoline and diesel.” In contrast to other hydrogen prototypes, hydrogen 7 has already reached a high stage of development. All components of this innovative technology were developed according to the usual criteria for mass-production vehicles. In the interim a small series of 100 vehicles has been produced. The Club of Pioneers captured the immense excitement over the Hydrogen 7 in its video blogs.

While most of the automobile manufacturers attach importance to fuel cells, the Hydrogen 7 does not transform hydrogen into electricity, but burns it immediately. One aspect of technology that should enhance the typical BMW driving pleasure is this: The 12-cylinder vehicle has an output of 260 HP and 230 km/h at top performance. And when there is no hydrogen refueling station nearby, the fun is not over yet. A short push on the H2 button of the steering wheel switches the bivalent engine from hydrogen to high-octane gasoline.

For Hydrogen 7 to be 100% ecologically compatible, several tasks must be tackled. Hydrogen is currently extracted from petroleum gas. The vision for the future is to manufacture hydrogen from biomass, sun, wind and water – but that is all very expensive at the present. Fortunately there are enough pioneers who have accepted the challenge and are working with great vigor for a sustainable future!

Several of these pioneers from Germany will be together with BMW on 3 October, the Day of German Unification, to present their sustainable ideas in the “Garden of Ideas” in the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. The Club of Pioneers has already presented a series of these projects in this special and will also be in Washington, D.C. for you – so stay tuned!

Placido Domingo on shrinking coastlines and energy-efficient reading lamps

Date: August 21, 2007

Placido Domingo spoke with us during our interview about the shrinking coasts in Mexico. Domingo was born in 1941 in Madrid, Spain, and moved with about eight years of age to this country. Where they used to have about 20 meters of beach he says, nowadays the beach is gone, shrunk. The singer assumes this is due to climate change.

Domingo was quite concerned about the impacts of environmental misbehavior during our talk; he named historical buildings that survived centuries and seem to be endangered due to air pollution. Domingo who is frequently singing in all the Major Opera Houses of the World - amongst them treasures of architectural history like the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Vienna State Opera- loves these buildings.

Domingo has also talked about the air pollution in Beijing which challenge the Olympic Games next year. The city of Beijing is like many others over-polluted and stuck with traffic. The government now has to call to action (We reported).

Sustainabiliyt is a topic among the opera singers and artists Domingo knows. He however has to fly which concerns him. Apart from that he tries to save energy and water.

During the Salzburg Festival Domingo had the chance to talk with his colleagues and friends about the Hydrogen 7 limousine which he was driven in during the Festival. He liked the car he said during the interview and he expressed the hope that soon a hydrogen infrastructure will be established. Having in mind that he needs to fly a lot from concert to concert he added the wish that even airplanes will work with hydrogen one day.

The Opera singer who is of an excellent health and voice is one ambassador of Hear the World, an institution that cares for hearing. In the Mission Statement they say: "By 2015, an estimated 700 million people will be hearing impaired, the equivalent of people using the internet today."
Pollution destroys historical buildings and the natural surrounding. He tested the Hydrogen 7 and said he enjoed this expierience. "Thump up", he says for new kinds of mobility.
